Croeso!  - Welcome

Welcome to the Welsh department. The aim of the Welsh department is to promote the enjoyment of learning Welsh, allowing pupils the opportunity to improve their bilingual skills.

Students study Welsh at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. The department has 2 Welsh teachers, Mr Harries and Miss Smith, with Dr Alter and Mr Craven also teaching Welsh classes.

At GCSE level, pupils study the Welsh GCSE course with the GCSE Welsh Second Language specification enabling learners to understand and use the language for a variety of purposes and audiences. It will develop learner’s language learning skills and strategies in order to enable them to communicate and interact confidently and spontaneously in relevant situations and specified context.

Key Stage 3

The programme of study for Key Stage 3 in Welsh allows pupils to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of the Welsh language. Pupils study a range of topics and focus on developing oral, writing and reading skills.

Pupils will focus on learning vocabulary and grammatical constructions in a wide range of contexts, with opportunities to develop these skills through individual presentations, group conversations, various written tasks and reading tasks.

Topics covered at Key Stage 3 include Hobbies, School, Time, The Area, Holidays, Healthy eating, The Future, Sport, Music and Leisure time.

There is a weekly lunchtime club with Miss Smith and a member of the Urdd where Year 7 pupils enjoy Welsh games and activities. The annual Eisteddfod is also a great celebration of the talented pupils on St David’s Day.
