PIAP - Teaching and Learning

Learning and Teaching Update - 18.09.26

Now that we're settled back into the new school year, our focus has been on consistent routines in every classroom. Staff and learners are working to the same shared expectations for how lessons begin, run and end.

A particular focus has been the 'Do Now' - a short, focused task that learners complete independently as soon as they enter the classroom, before any teaching begins. These tasks are designed to help learners to recall and strengthen what they've learned previously, whether through a quick retrieval quiz, a challenging problem to solve, or a prompt to reactivate key vocabulary and ideas. As well as reinforcing prior learning, a well-run Do Now helps establish a calm, focused start to every lesson and gives teachers a quick, useful check on how well learners have grasped previous topics.

These routines sit alongside our Llantwit ARK values of Ambition, Respect and Kindness, which continue to underpin what we expect from every learner, in every lesson - from arriving on time, prepared and ready to learn, to listening carefully, supporting one another, and treating others as they would like to be treated.

We've also begun our programme of Wednesday morning staff briefings, where teachers share good practice with one another. The first two sessions were led by Mr Sherrin and Mr Crocker, who gave colleagues a look into their own classroom approaches. It's a valuable opportunity for staff to learn from one another and share the great work already happening across the school.

Thank you too to parents and carers for your support in making sure children have the right equipment and books ready each day - it makes a real difference in helping lessons get off to a purposeful start. We look forward to sharing more updates as the term continues.
