Learning Support at Llantwit Major School

Our Commitment to Inclusion

At Llantwit Major School, we value every learner and are committed to ensuring that all students can access a broad, balanced, and inclusive curriculum. We recognise that some learners may require additional support to reach their academic and social potential. Our Learning Support Department includes the Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo) and a team of experienced Teaching Assistants who provide a range of support to help learners access the curriculum effectively.

The school has extensive experience supporting learners with a wide range of needs, including:

  • General learning difficulties
  • Dyslexia and specific learning difficulties
  • Autism Spectrum Condition
  • Hearing or visual impairments
  • Speech, language, and communication needs
  • Behavioural, social, and emotional needs

We aim to remove barriers to learning wherever possible and work collaboratively with learners, families, and external agencies to ensure appropriate provision.

The Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Act

The Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act 2018 has been implemented across Wales from January 2022. It replaces the previous Special Educational Needs (SEN) Code of Practice. Terms such as Statement of SEN, School Action, and School Action Plus are no longer used.

Under the ALN Act:

  • Learners identified as having Additional Learning Needs and requiring Additional Learning Provision (ALP) will have an Individual Development Plan (IDP).
  • Additional Learning Provision refers to provision that is additional to, or different from the universal provision made for others of the same age (Section 6.11 of the Act).
  • Learners receiving support will be placed on the school’s Monitoring Register and may also have a support plan.

Information We Must Provide

As required by the ALN Act, our school website includes information about:

  • How to access the Local Authority’s arrangements for advice and information relating to ALN
  • Local Authority arrangements for avoiding and resolving disagreements, including access to advocacy services
  • Information regarding parent/carer rights to request LA reconsideration

What to do if you think your child has an additional need:

If you have concerns about your child’s development or learning, please contact the ALNCo or your child’s Wellbeing Officer. We can support in the following ways:

  • Neurodevelopmental Needs (e.g., ADHD, ASD):
We can discuss concerns and, where appropriate, make a referral to the Neurodevelopmental Pathway.
  • Dyslexia Traits:
The school can carry out appropriate screening for dyslexia characteristics.
  • Motor Skills (fine or gross):
We can refer to the Occupational Therapy team for assessment and advice.

We encourage parents and carers to contact us early if they have concerns. We work collaboratively to ensure every learner receives the right support, at the right time.
