Drama

Not everyone aspires to be or is going to be an actor. However, this is the age of the ‘presentation' where products and ideas are sold in a competitive market on the basis of how well the presenter can vouch for his/her point of view.
No-one is exempt from the need to be able to communicate with each other. The scientist, the businessman, the engineer, the bank manager, the shop assistant, the hairdresser all require the skills that Drama can offer. Interviews require confidence and assertiveness, an ability to speak at ease and with audibility and relaxed appropriate body language.
The drama curriculum at Llantwit Major School covers a range of skills. On the one hand we prepare the student for KS 3, GCSE and A Level Drama but the lessons are also an excellent platform for every individual to develop the life skills needed in the future.
Drama quite easily addresses the following elements:
- Concentration
- Confidence building
- Working with others
- Building trust
- Problem solving
- The ability to analyse and evaluate
In this Drama Department there is also a purposeful focus on RESPONSIBILTY. All students are encouraged to be independent thinkers and learn to take responsibility for their own learning and achievements.
The Head of Department values the contribution of all the students and recognises that they should be empowered to feel that they can contribute to the development of the department by means of participating in the teaching of parts of lessons and leading of the various clubs.
There is always a working atmosphere in THE STUDIO and students are encouraged to make full use of the facility during lessons, lunchtimes and after school. It is expected that they respect the equipment, each other and their teacher.
It is insisted that all work is taken seriously and deadlines are adhered to. In return students make strong relationships and experience the discipline and commitment that will definitely mirror what is expected of them in the ‘real’ world.
The department is committed to extra-curricular activities and has a strong belief that this extra work is vital to the development of the subject and the pupils. Currently there are at least TWO productions a year. One is usually a musical production and takes place in July while the other is a variety concert allowing pupils to showcase their particular talent. This concert normally takes place in the Autumn Term and includes ALL years. As well as these performances, the following activities take place every week:
DRAMA CLUB ALL years Monday 3 pm - 5pm
DANCE CLUB Upper School Tuesday 1.10pm
DRAMA CLUB Lower School > Thursday 3 pm - 4 pm
FILM CLUB ALL years > Friday Lunchtimes
EXTRA GCSE/A LEVEL rehearsals every Lunch and after school.

The teaching in this Drama Department is based on the following Chinese Proverb:
"Tell me and I will forget.
Show me and I will remember.
Involve me and I will understand."
How will you get involved?
